Between my front door and living room is a space. It's about nineteen feet long and nine feet wide. Not exactly a sunporch and not exactly *not* a sunporch. Bigger than a foyer yet smaller than a real living room.
As a matter of fact, my husband, Pete, tells me that years ago (before my chapter in his life), it was a tiny one-car attached garage. That was before he moved the house to its current location.
(That’s a story for another day…)
Nonetheless, since the house is so small, he decided the car could live outside. He then converted the garage to inside space.
In the south (slightly east) facing wall, Pete installed a bank of windows. Thereby catching the solar heat in the winter to warm the entire main floor. He calls this space the greenhouse.

I loved the space so much, one of the things I did when I first moved in, was set up a small table and chairs. Grin. I wanted to sit leisurely as I looked out the windows.
Oft times during the summer, I use the space more like a studio. I set up my easel and paint or bring my typewriter out and write or... whatever strikes my fancy. One spring I even let two of the tame barn cats inside to have kittens (the greenhouse has wonderful easy to mop tile floors).
(That’s a story for another day...)

Anyway, during the cold Midwestern winters, the greenhouse space shelters my plants. Giant philodendron and desert rose and geraniums and bird of paradise and … quite a few others.
Scattered throughout the house methinks we may have one or two (hundred) plants. They scrub the air clean and help keep the moisture level up. They flower and I gather seeds and I start new plants. I have fresh herbs for cooking and sweetgrass for the cats. Annually I give away dozens of plants. All of which gives me smiles.

I love to sit in the tiny space and linger over my morning coffee. There, my solar-powered self can absorb energy to get me through the day. I can write or read or visit warmer climes in my mind. I look out the windows upon a wide world and envision all the things…
Bird of Paradise is one of my favorite flowers
I swing through jungles with Tarzan or swim rivers with Mowgli or sip chocolate with Montezuma…
It's a wonderful, tiny, creative space where I can get lost...
Grin… until I come quickly back to reality when Pete yells, “Put on some shoes and grab a jacket! The cows are out!”
Oh, and one more thing before you go...
