Roise came to visit last week. She was so excited to be able to check an item off her bucket list ... visit a lavender farm.
Getting ready to pick our lavender...
When I had described to Roise how I went to Loess Hills Lavender Farm to pick and make some lavender wands, she said she wanted to visit the farm... she wanted to try to make them herself. So I told her about the second cutting season in late August and we planned a visit so she could check that item off.
We had a lovely drive through the hills and arrived at the lavender farm in no time.
While she was gathering her lavender, I told her I had some dried in my kitchen for cooking. That when we got home, while she made her wands, I would cook up something. She had not realized what a yummy flavor lavender could add to food.
Then, as we finished picking and walked into the shop, I remembered Tracy had lavender sugar cookies for sale. I bought a small bag so Roise could have a taste. Love at first bite!
Roise making her lavender wands...
After we arrived home, Roise started on her wands. I thought something light and cold sounded yummy with all the heat we've been having.
So I found the Gettin' Fresh! in the Kitchen fruit kabob and lavender glaze recipe I had tried last year.
I thought the glaze part of the recipe would be scrumptious on vanilla ice cream.
Mixing up the glaze...
Though I wanted the glaze more sauce-like, so I added a teaspoon of cornstarch, heated it on the stove, and simmered until the cornstarch cooked. As the butterscotch-colored glaze/sauce cooled, it thickened. At this point, it tasted really strong. (Just so you know.)
By the time Roise was done with her wands, the sauce was cool, and we drizzled it on our ice cream. The creamy vanilla was the perfect complement to the orange lavender of the sauce.
Yummy vanilla ice cream with orange lavender sauce!
If you like lavender, and you've not yet tried it as a cooking flavor, your tastebuds don't know what they're missing!
Yum!
