He Brought Me Something...

I love to cook. And my husband loves to eat the food he loves to eat.
One of his favorites is apple pie. Specifically, my apple pie with a lattice top.

A mix of apples
One of my first cookbooks, in 1975 pre internet, was The Joy of Cooking and that's where I first found a recipe for apple pie.
Of course, in the years since, I have tweaked the recipe to become my own. Adding a bit of this or that, not adding something else.
Nevertheless, the basic recipe remains the same, and is a good place to start if you want to make pie.
To Pete, my open-minded-old-school-progressive-foodie-who-loves-to-cook-Thanksgiving-dinner husband, Thanksgiving is about the food. Often, it's just the two of us for dinner. Fixing all that food seems a bit much to me. However, we live on a farm... something will eat the leftovers... so he cooks and I enjoy watching him. He putters around the kitchen playing with the turkey and the dressing and the sides and we chat. Anyway, Pete went to the store this week, and when he returned, he said he got me something.

Roses on my table
That usually means fresh flowers for my table, but not always. "Whatever he brought will be grand," I thought. He 'surprises' me with something about twice a month. Which is really nice. When I asked him what he brought, he was so pleased with himself... "Apples... I'm going to let you bake me a pie for Thanksgiving!" "Really?" says I. "Yes!" he exclaimed, "I thought you would like something to do!" Laughing, he continued, "I'm like that, thinking of you. I just want to give you an opportunity to shine, too." "Really?" says I, chuckling.

One of my pies
This is a regular routine for us just before most holidays... and times in-between. He knows I'll make pie.
And a great dessert makes any meal better.
